"BLACK CARD" Thursday's "Night" Event @ FR.OG FRANCE ORIGINE
Review: Turquoise and pink and glittery, FR.OG looks like a place where Moroccan Barbie would go for her couscous, though she'd find favorites and spices from other cuisines as well. She'd traipse across green papaya, canoodle with cardamom and flirt with lemon grass. The restaurant's name is a truncation of the words France Origine, but its executive chef, Didier Virot, best known for his stewardship of Aix uptown, canvasses the globe — Lebanon, Vietnam — for inspiration. He may be traveling in too many directions at once. Mr. Virot is to be commended for experimenting, but his menu needs editing and his decorator needs to calm down. As you navigate the spiral staircase from the street-level floor to the main dining room below you are bombarded with the twinkle of a gazillion shards of reflective glass on the wall. Like other aspects of FR.OG, it's kind of neat but also kind of silly. — Frank Bruni of The New York Times
